Hey Reader,

⏀The Power of Quitting – My long term readers know I am a big advocate of effectiveness and not just efficiency in life. More important to do the right things as opposed to doing all things faster. But our hyper-productivity, multi-tasking, grit above all society wants the latest edge, hack or podcast that will provide more success. This New Yorker profile about the writings of Oliver Burkeman show that sometimes the path forward to your best life is to quit the path you have in front of you.

💡 ” In the end these things matter most: How well did you love? How fully did you live? How deeply did you let go? ” – Jack Kornfield

⏀History Remembers the Artists – Famed VC investor x philosopher Naval Ravikant talks about the power of art in this short but insightful video clip.

💡 Art, like Life, is for it’s own sake and nothing else. That is where its raw beauty and power comes from – and what we all admire.

⏀Idea I’m mullingThe self we see, know and love. I previously wrote about the power of self-belief, even to the point of self-delusion. Consider this quote by singer and songwriter Kim Gordon: “people pay to see others believe in themselves.” While I am the first person to troll people who advocate to simply think positively or “manifest their success” with Law of Attraction nonsense, I will say that self-belief is different. Time and time again I have seen my clients as well as friends and family argue for why they can’t do something. Sometimes these reasons are valid. Sometimes not. Rarely are they, however, deterministic. But it never fails to surprise how vociferously they advocate for their own limits, doubts, lack of resources. When I point this out, they inevitably stutter, stop or pause.

But the truly successful people in the world have figure out is that beyond emotions and logic, identity is the driving force behind our decision making. We make choices from not only who we think we are, but who we think others think we are.

This is why, in this crazy mixed up world we live in, being our true ourselves is both the hardest and easiest thing we will ever do. It’s difficult to remove all the barriers and false stories and social pressures that block us up. Free your mind after all. But once they are gone? What is easier than just being yourself. Magic…

💡 Getting out of your own damn way may be the most important thing you EVER do in your life.

⏀ Quote I’m pondering“Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before.” – Kurt Vonnegut

💡Information is everywhere, and therefore cheap. What is truly valuable is the ability to deeply reflect on the meaning of things.

⏀ Disruption in Healthcare – Most physicians are truly at a lost to understand how investors and venture capitalists (“suits” to us) think about our industry. “If only they would only get of our way and let us practice medicine the way it should be… ” we think. But with 1 in 5 dollars in the US now spent on healthcare, it is too big of a market for major corporations and investors to ignore. So we in medicine need to know how they think else we risk becoming trapped when the barbarians are the gate so to speak. This excellent podcast by AZ16 is an excellent primer into the mindset of techno-optimism and it’s potential to empower beautiful consumer experience in healthcare.

💡 Investors believe we are at a “leapfrog moment” in healthcare where total costs, consumer frustration and the potential of AI are at a critical mass – and will allow us to skip multiple steps in the traditional innovation cycle.
