⏀ Idea I’m mulling – Wood + Water. There are two forms of strength in life. There is the directed, brittle but engaged energy of the wood or the trunk of a tree. Then there’s the flowing, adaptive but deep strength of water. Yin and Yang. The East often lionizes the value of “being like water,” as in the famous Bruce Lee quote.
But we need both in life. There are times to use influence, persuasion and attention (water) but others require a more command, structured approach with people and situations (wood).
This recalls the distinction famed political theorist Joseph Nye differentiated between hard and soft power. Hard power is ‘the ability to get others to act in ways that are contrary to their initial preferences and strategies’ often using sticks and carrots. However, soft power is the ability to get ‘others to want the outcomes that you want using “attraction rather than coercion.”
Wood energy is often useful in emergencies such as running a code. But getting someone to quit smoking, a longterm challenge of rapport building and engagement over time, well that requires water.
💡 Know the difference between hard and soft power. Your leadership potential depends on it.
