⏀ Super Mario Brothers & Creativity – Zelda, Donkey Kong and Super Mario brothers are all iconic characters created by Nintendo’s legendary chief creative Miyamoto. In this New York Times article, he outlines the history and future of Nintendo. In the middle of the article he drops a hidden nugget about the essence of innovation:

“Mr. Yamauchi back in the day would tell us that we are not good at fighting: ‘We are weak — so don’t go picking fights with other companies,’” Miyamoto said, explaining the company’s longstanding pursuit of originality.

⏀Idea I’m mulling– “Wellness +.” Just as all companies are now digitally based even if they are brick and mortar, I believe increasingly all companies need to have a wellness footprint. It is a $5.6 trillion global industry – and growing. And seeing spin-offs and add-ons to wellness is one of the hottest areas of growth – what I call “wellness+”. Some examples:

  • Wellness + Hospitality -> New longevity resorts from the creator of the LA club scene & Tony Robbins
  • Wellness + Fitness – Debut of Love Life an integrative gym with functional medicine, holistic. nutrition services and more
  • Wellness + Computing – The wearables revolution (Whoop, Oura ring) and the latest iteration of the Apple Watch that will check for sleep apnea.
  • Wellness + Fashion – Rise of Lululemon, GymShark, Alo Yoga as the “it” brands of era. Peloton? Well that’s a more complicated story
  • Wellness + Women – Rise of “FemTech” is a much needed corrective in the space
  • Wellness + TikTok – There’s a new rise of health influencers popularizing their content on TikTok and other social platforms. This is now the primary means of learning about health for the under 40 market.
