Hey Reader,
⏀The Secret to Success – As you know, I don’t believe in “hacks” for life. But there are strategies that make your path easier – or harder. Here is a short clip on the mindset strategy that makes elite level success possible:
💡 Money requires speed. Wealth takes time. But in business, unlike in medicine, faster decisions are usually better. You learn faster and get to iterate more often.
⏀A Moment of Reflection-
What story of my greatest failure became my greatest asset?
💡No one roots for a hero that had it easy. Your lowest points are your origin story- if you let it.
⏀Idea I’m mulling– Art v Commerce. Art is anything that truly creates real value in society, whether it’s helping patients, creating resonant emotional stories or coaching Little League. Commerce is everything else. And yet, commerce has become dominant in our way of life. Commerce is just trading bits of paper, or digits or pixels or increasingly, cryptocurrencies. Most businesses are not art. It’s value is not intrinsic but secondary- because so many artists need commerce to survive. In the modern world, the artist therefore cannot expect their art to pay for itself. And our tax code lionizes commerces but punishes artists. So the artist must finance itself through commerce, thereby enhancing the ascendancy of commerce over art. And, thus, we have a rich society that is increasingly poor.
💡Our society is increasingly “financialized” at the expense of creating real wealth.
⏀Quote I’m pondering– From Scott Galloway (Prof G)
Entrepreneur is synonym for salesperson, and a salesperson is a pedestrian term for storyteller. Pro tip: no startup makes sense. We (entrepreneurs) are all imposters who must deploy a fiction ( a story) that captures the imagination and attracts capital to pull the future forward and turn rhyme into reason. No business I have started, at the moment of inception, made any sense… until it did. Or didn’t. The only way to predict the future is to make it.
💡 The Most Important Skillset of Life is Storytelling – both the stories you tell yourself and those you tell others.
⏀Why Hospitals Keeping Running out of Drugs – And not just any drugs, but relatively cheap generics. This excellent recent Planet Money podcast talks about buying pressures, supply chains and why the healthcare industry is still fucked up.
💡 We are running out of generic sterile injectables. This is the greatest supply chain problem in the country and due to the unique conflicting incentives in healthcare. The price mechanism of medicine is broken.
